• Description:
  The guidelines for pesticide manufacturing and formulating processes prepared by a United Nations interagency effort chaired by the World Health Organization were summarized. The premise of the guidelines was that successful health and safety programs include a system of control. The points of control were through management and training, through technology, via measurement, and during storage and disposal. Commitment from management to the health and safety of the workers was important. Education of the workers should be to make them aware of the hazards and the control measures available. The three parts of a complete safety program were: a review of potential hazards and symptoms of exposure; proper operation of equipment, materials handling, use of protective equipment, and methods of detection; and ongoing training for reinforcement and understanding of new procedures. Controls through technology occur at the point of origin of the hazardous material, in the general workplace, and with the individual worker. [Description provided by NIOSH]
