Strategies for evaluating the effectiveness of training programs.

  Strategies used for the evaluation of the effectiveness of occupational health and safety training programs were reviewed. Studies conducted over the past 10 years have indicated that those involved in training programs were frequently not directly involved in or aware of evaluation activities related to such programs. The training initiatives used by the New Jersey/New York Hazardous Materials Worker Training Center sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) were described. Features of the program included identifying and meeting the needs of clients, ongoing evaluations, faculty assessments, training facilities, and medical surveillance. Outcome measures used in the evaluation of training effectiveness such as assessment of changes in behavior and knowledge were described and discussed. Specific incidents were described demonstrating the positive impact of proper safety and health training in preventing injuries in two instances. The collection, use, and management of the data collected by the NIEHS was described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
