Description:A study was conducted to determine which mailbag caused less fatigue of the lateral trunk flexors, the conventional bag, a bag with an additional strap around the waist, or a double bag which distributed the weight from each shoulder. Healthy right handed volunteer male subjects were recruited from the University of Utah to participate in this study. They carried three different mailbags during a 1 hour simulated mail delivery route. Use of the waist belt decreased trunk muscle fatigue by symmetrically distributing the load from the mailbag. A significant difference in fatigue scores between the double bag and the side pack with waistbelt was not demonstrated, possibly due to the lack of power calculated for those two trials. While an increase was noted in muscle fatigue when carrying the standard mailbag, a cause and effect relationship was not established between low trunk muscle endurance and low back injuries. The authors indicate a need to identify and correct workplace hazards due to the financial cost musculoskeletal disorders placed on industry and the health care system.
