Immediate feedback in audiometric testing.

  Empirical results were presented from analyzing an audiometric database which had been formed from 1982 through 1988. An immediate feedback system was instituted in 1987. Directly after annual audiometric testing, employees were given a copy of the test form. Boxes on the form were checked to indicate hearing status, age corrected standard threshold shift (STS), and the need for follow up. The results of the study indicated that a decline occurred in rate of age corrected STS which had both instantaneous and deferred components. The instantaneous component appeared in the same year feedback was given, and the deferred component occurred in the year following feedback. These findings suggest that one component of the demonstrated decline in STS may be due to on site retesting, and a separate component may be due to improved hearing conservation practices among a better informed workforce.
