Evaluation of a 20-year hearing conservation program.

  A database was established by the DuPont Company in 1966 to evaluate the company's hearing conservation program. The database included hearing threshold levels obtained by periodic audiometric tests, noise exposure levels as determined in the workplace, the pattern of use of ear protective equipment, and the pertinent demographic information. Differences in hearing threshold levels obtained at the beginning and end of the study period were analyzed in a longitudinal study initiated in 1981. Findings revealed improvements in the hearing conservation program with respect to quality monitored, computer controlled audiometry, and subsequent workload and paperwork reductions in the office of the facility physician. Engineering controls were an integral part of the program throughout its development. Even so, periodic evaluations continued to indicate that monitoring the use of personal protective devices is the most effective means of preventing damage to the ear and hearing loss.
