Description:The effect of storage time on the endotoxin content of cotton dust samples was studied. Vertical elutriator cotton dust samples collected in an experimental cardroom and a remote room during a cotton quality study in 1985 were analyzed for their endotoxin content several weeks and 3 and 6 years after collection. The endotoxin concentrations were determined by a chromogenic or kinetic chromogenic modification of the Limulus amebocyte lysate assay. The mean dust content of the cardroom samples analyzed several weeks and 3 and 6 years after collection ranged from 1.45 to 1.87, 1.30 to 2.10, and 1.39 to 1.88 milligrams (mg), respectively. The mean endotoxin content of these samples varied from 2307 to 2725, 998 to 2363, and 1423 to 2223 endotoxin units (EU)/mg dust, respectively. The mean dust content of the remote room samples analyzed several weeks and 3 and 6 years after collection varied from 0.66 to 0.77, 0.48 to 0.88, and 0.52 to 0.70mg, respectively. The mean endotoxin contents of these samples ranged from 1218 to 1345, 887 to 2038, and 738 to 1305EU/mg, respectively. The decrease in the endotoxin content of the cardroom but not the remote room samples that occurred during the first 3 years of storage was statistically significant. The decreases that occurred over the second 3 years were not statistically significant. The authors conclude that the endotoxin content of cotton dust samples collected in the cardroom shows a decrease over 6 years of storage, with most of the decrease occurring in the first 3 years.
