Description:Uses of the Zymark Benchmate were discussed. The Benchmate was a microprocessor controlled system designed to prepare chemical samples for analysis. The Benchmate had the capability to dispense reagents and perform internal standard additions, mixing, dilution, liquid membrane filtration, solid phase extraction, and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) injections. The Benchmate memory had the capability to record all steps in any preparative procedure. A typical Benchmate HPLC setup was discussed. The Benchmate was connected to the chromatograph in such a way that the output from the HPLC pump entered its injector valve. Another line carried the valve output to the column which was connected to an ultraviolet detector. A closed contact circuit linked the Benchmate to the gradient controller and a Dionex advanced computer interface. When a sample was injected the Benchmate signaled the software components to begin their programs. The Benchmate had an auxiliary circuit that could signal when an HPLC run was completed. Directions for operating the software and Benchmate personal computer and making weighings, dispensing liquid reagents, writing procedures, and making HPLC injections were provided. Utility programs supplied for use with the Benchmate software were described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
