Differentiation of washed and unwashed cotton.

  Research was undertaken to define washed cotton using objective criteria correlated to sample history and lung function data. Such a definition will be necessary if washed cotton as a separate entity is to be a candidate for an exemption from the Dust Standard. The analyses which were used to successfully determine the wash status of cotton samples included conductance, potassium content, contact angle, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and ash content. In a double blind study of 13 washed cottons and four unwashed cottons from the MQ-79 series, three of the analyses, conductance, potassium content and ash content, were tested and correctly distinguished between washed and unwashed cottons. Since completion of the double blind studies, potassium contents of 21 unwashed and 14 washed cottons have been determined. The unwashed cottons consistently contained at least six times as much potassium as washed cottons. The best predictors of certain lung function measurements for the MQ-79 series of cottons were water soluble reducing substances and percent potassium, and the water soluble reducing substances and conductance.
