Description:This testimony contains comments that NIOSH requests be attached as supplemental information to the request of OSHA for safety standards in manual lifting tasks. The topics considered in this supplemental information include the usefulness of employee screening programs, the purpose of strength testing, the importance of worker training in manual handling techniques, possible engineering controls for use in manual handling tasks, the usefulness of properly placed handles, the avoidance of asymmetric lifting, the maximum weight and load moment, psychophysics, criteria to be used in establishing a lifting standard, and several observations from users with regard to the efficacy of the NIOSH Work Practices Guide for Manual Lifting.
