Description:The preliminary results of an evaluation of a pulmonary rehabilitation program for miners were presented. The cohort consisted of 390 white males who enrolled in the Pennsylvania Coal Workers Respiratory System Program (CWRDP) in 1979. The comparisons consisted of 390 persons who were evaluated but did not participate in the program. The age range of the subjects was 29 to 88 years, mean 64 years. Fifty six percent of the cohort was classified as being impaired on the basis of decrements in their 1 second forced expiratory volume (FEV1). The proportion of impaired subjects increased with increasing age. The percentage of impaired subjects increased with increasing number of cigarettes smoked per day; however, 43 percent of the nonsmokers had a respiratory impairment. The mean FEV1s of subjects who were not hospitalized did not differ significantly from those who were hospitalized for fewer than 7 days. Subjects who were hospitalized for longer than 7 days had FEV1s that were nearly 10 percent lower than those of the nonhospitalized subjects or subjects hospitalized for fewer than 7 days. The author concludes that prolonged hospital stays are associated with respiratory impairment. If the CWRDP results in improved ventilatory function a subsequent reduction in the number of hospitalizations may be expected. [Description provided by NIOSH]
