Airway responsiveness following inhalation of cotton bract extract.

  A double blind, random, cross over study involving airway provocation with either cotton bract extract (CBE) or normal saline solution (NSS) was carried out. Thirteen healthy volunteers were exposed to CBE or NSS with measurements of nonspecific bronchial responsiveness being taken prior to, and 2 and 8 hours after provocation. The study demonstrated that the inhalation of an aerosol of an aqueous extract of cotton bract resulted in a mild and transient hyperresponsiveness to methacholine in healthy volunteers. The response to methacholine was independent of the lung function response to cotton bract itself. These findings only allow speculation as to their relevance to airway obstruction in byssinosis. However, the public health importance of examining such relationships becomes evident when considering the possible consequences of cotton dust exposure in textile workers, chronic airway obstruction.
