Description:Providing health care to rural populations in France was discussed and the problems involved were outlined. It was noted that he cost of medical care in France is increasing faster than the rate of inflation. The cost of medical care in 1975 had a consumption index of 247 hen using 1969 as a base year with an index of 100, while the overall consumer price index for 1975 was only 161. Reasons for this include expanding social coverage, increases in numbers of older patients, the increasing numbers of physicians and hospital beds, the advent of new and expensive medical technologies, and a more frequent recourse to hospitalization as a means of medical treatment. Health problems specific to rural areas were enumerated. The costs of providing health care to rural populations have risen due to expanding hospital facilities and increasing use of hospitalization as a treatment option. Rural hospitalizations are characterized by a much higher proportion of older patients being hospitalized and an increasing number of admissions for medical or convalescence reasons. Typical medical problems of rural hospitalizations stem from zoonotic infections, injuries resulting from increased mechanization of farming practices, exposure to toxic substances, and poor dietary habits. The functions of the Mutalite Sociale Agricole (MSA) were discussed. The MSA manages sickness coverage for farmers. It focuses primarily on preventive medicine by attempting to improve the distribution of health care, promoting global medicine (prevention and education as well as treatment), and cooperating with health care professionals.
