Survey of accidents caused by farm machinery in rural Japan.

  Accidents caused by farm machinery in Japan were discussed. Data obtained from surveys conducted by the Japanese Association of Rural Medicine from 1971 to 1975, by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry from 1972 to 1974, and by Saku Central Hospital (SCH) from 1972 to 1977 were reviewed. Only accidents that occurred while doing farm work using farm machinery were included; accidents caused by human error were not included. All surveys have shown that the number of accidents caused by farm machinery has increased slightly year by year. Approximately three times as many males as females had accidents. When stratified by age, the largest number of accidents occurred with males in their 40s. Most of the accidents occurred during the rice harvesting season in October and November. A large cluster of accidents also occurred during May and June, this being attributed to the busy spring farming season. Pedestrian tractors accounted for the largest number of accidents, followed by rice threshing machines, combines, mowers, riding type tractors, and cutters, in that order. In the SCH survey chain saws and power saws were frequently involved in accidents. Farm fields were the most common places for accidents followed by farm houses and then farm roads. The specific mechanical parts and operations involved in each type of accident were reviewed. Contusions, fractures, lacerations, and sprains were the most frequently reported injuries. Lost work time depended on the type and severity of the injury but ranged from 7 days to 3 months. The authors conclude that farmers in Japan suffer relatively serious injuries from farm machinery. Greater emphasis should be placed on improving work practices, developing safer machinery, and accident prevention. [Description provided by NIOSH]
