A study of children's mental hygiene and family composition.

    The existence of family stress was studied in two populations, one rural and one urban, living in Japan. The relationship between symptoms and family problems was studied in cases where there had been consultations on the mental hygiene of children. In the rural group there were 247 males and 153 females ranging in age from 0 to 21 years with the average age being 5 years and 9 months. The major symptoms in the stressed individuals were enuresis, followed by retardation, neurosis, chromosome anomalies, epilepsy, psychosomatic disease, school refusal, problem behavior, tic, physical disease, pollakisuria, stuttering, fecal soiling and others. Ages of the urban patients ranged from 0 to 21 with the average age being 9 years and 5 months for 283 males and 117 females. The major symptoms in these patients was retardation followed by interpersonal relationship phobia, neurosis, problem behavior, enuresis, apathy, stuttering, epilepsy, psychosomatic disease, tic, chromosome anomalies, pollakisuria, fecal soiling, physical disease and others. The number of extended family situations was greater in rural areas whereas the nuclear families were more common in the cities. The findings indicated that in the urban area nuclear family the incidence of disturbances for interpersonal relationships and verbal contact, when speech retardation was included, was high. Urban nuclear families demonstrated increased incidences of all neuroses, including phobia and anxiety neurosis. Rural extended families demonstrated a high incidence of hypochondria and hysteria.
