Description:A transcript of a research analysis meeting on aniline (62533) was presented. Topics discussed by the eight participants included the history of occupational exposures to aniline, methemoglobinemia, effects on the heart, effects on the central nervous system, case studies on individuals exposed to aniline, biological indicators of exposure to aniline, bladder tumors and aniline, analytical techniques, methods of determining exposure, and production controls in an aniline facility. Case reports discussed included that of a woman who had worked for a fur company which used aniline dyes in fur preparation. The woman experienced blue discoloration of the skin. Other case studies included the effects on newborns caused by an aniline containing ink mark on diapers, and exposure of a student to aniline as a result of a practical joke. Studies on the effects of aniline on animals in the laboratory were reviewed. In considering the association of aniline with bladder tumors, it was noted that it was always aniline combined with some other chemical which was implicated, and not aniline alone. Analytical techniques for measuring aniline exposure were discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
