Description:Response time evaluations were conducted for three industrial grade pressure mat systems for use as part of a safety sensor system for industrial robot workstations. Each pressure mat system was composed of a sensor and electronic interfacing circuitry. An actual robot was used in the assessment of stopping performance. Mat-A measured changes in resistance, mat-B measured a change in light conduction in a fiberoptic system, and mat-C measured changes in the electrical current in the mat when pressure was applied. An aluminum plate was used as a simulated foot in testing the mats. Six different areas of each mat were tested. Average loads required to initiate a signal were 1.53 pounds/square inch (lb/in2) for mat- A, 2.95lb/in2 for mat-B, and 4.78lb/in2 for mat-C. To initiate a signal, mat-A required 0.1141 seconds (sec), mat-B required average time was 0.3666sec for mat-A, 0.3770sec for mat-B, and systems are effective at detection of intrusion and stopping a robot under experimental conditions. The authors recommend further study to determine the effect of partial surface footfalls, area over which load is applied, and uneven floors. [Description provided by NIOSH]
