Description:The status of a case control study of soft tissue sarcoma, non Hodgkin's lymphoma, and Hodgkin's disease among pesticide applicators was discussed. The case group consisted of white males, aged 21 years or older, diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, non Hodgkin's lymphoma, or Hodgkin's disease while residing in Kansas. During 1976 to 1982, there were 200 subjects with soft tissue sarcoma and 173 with Hodgkin's disease. A sample of 200 males diagnosed with non Hodgkin's lymphoma during 1979 to 1983 was also included. The comparisons included white males drawn from the general population of Kansas. Three comparisons were matched to each case as to age and vital status. Half of the soft tissue sarcoma and non Hodgkin's lymphoma and 33.3 percent of the Hodgkin's disease cases died before the study was initiated. The authors note that the cases and comparisons, or their relatives have been interviewed by telephone regarding date and place of birth, marital status, education, religion, ethnicity, height, weight, farming practices, non farming occupations, military service, pesticides used at home, consumption of tobacco, alcohol and raw milk products, present and past medical conditions, medical treatments, trauma, familial cancer, and the number and health of any offspring. Questions on farming practices included calendar years working or living on farm land, farm names, locations and sizes, herbicides used, years and acres treated, names and locations of companies where herbicides were purchased, method of application, days or years exposed, and use of protective equipment. The overall response rate to the interviews is 93 percent. The process of entering and editing the data on the computer is being completed. Analytical techniques for determining herbicide exposure are being developed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
