• Description:
  Specific requirements for first aid kits for commercial divers are discussed. An evaluation of the needs for commercial diving first aid kits was conducted by representatives of naval and emergency medicine, labor, government, academia, the diving industry, and the Undersea Medical Society. The group concluded that at least 90 percent of all accidents involving commercial divers were of the type usually associated with construction and handling of heavy objects, and not related to diving. The standard type of first aid kit is considered adequate for most commercial diving accidents. The only special equipment needed for diving related accidents is a pressure chamber, an oxygen supply, and a special dart for penetrating the chest wall and relieving the pressure in the chest when decompressing a diver with a collapsed lung. The panel also considered it important that diving physicians and emergency medical technicians having training and competence in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
