  The primary function of the poison control center is to collect and maintain information on the toxicity of commercial products and give this information, along with treatment recommendations, to physicians when needed to treat a patient. Data received by the center is tabulated into various categories including: types of product such as insecticides or rodenticides, trade names of products, age of patient, number of cases with symptoms, hospitalization, and fatalities. Tables are kept which give comprehensive breakdowns by age, types and number of each symptom, persons making the contact phone calls, and types of reports received, and types of poisonings such as accidental, inhalation, or suicidal. Approximately 164,000 reports of ingestion from 517 poison control centers in 46 states were received at the control center in 1973. Children under 5 years of age were involved in 102,000 cases. Pesticides decreased from 5.5 to 4.8% of the total cases reported from 1970 to 1973. Approximately 90% of the cases in pesticide categories reported for children under 5 years old involved insecticides and rodenticides.
