Description:A manual is presented on a course in illumination measurements. Lessons are: sources of light, physics of light, source evaluation, the seeing task, measurement of light, and lighting criteria. An experiment is described to study the operating parameters of some common light detection devices and to evaluate their use in the construction of a simple series circuit light meter. Specific topics contained in the lesson are: history of the incandescent lamp, radiation from solids, radiation in gas discharge tubes, theory of light, other light phenomena, intensity distribution from a source, alterations in radiating pattern of source, diffusion of light design and characteristics of globes for diffusion, glass enclosed units, reduction of glare with polarizing materials, photometers, development of standards, comparison of the eye to a camera, retina, theories of vision, light incident on the retina, time threshold for vision, introduction to simple light meter, detectors for light meters, simple light meter, human lighting needs, specific requirements, factor affecting illumination, and cost analysis for lighting system.
