Description:This continuation of NIOSH 00068650 consists of descriptions of plastics manufacturing processes and the additives used in manufacturing polymers. Reports on polymerization of vinyl polymers and alkyd resins are included as examples of the two major types of polymerization reactions. Topics included under polymer processing methods are plastics processing industry, blow molding, the calender, casting of thermoplastics, casting of thermosets, centrifugal molding of reinforced plastics, coating, compounding and mixing, compression and transfer molding, compression molding, controls and instrumentation, extrusion, foam processing, injection molding, laminating of film, machining and finishing, mechanical forming, plastic composite processing, rotational molding, testing equipment, thermoforming tooling, transfer molding web impregnation and welding. Additives include antioxidants, antistatic agents, blowing agents, colorants, fibrous reinforcements for plastics, fillers for plastics, flame retardants, foaming agents, heat stabilizers, lubricants, mold release agents, organic peroxides, plasticizers, preservatives, processing aids, silane adhesion promoters, solvents, stabilizers, and ultraviolet stabilizers.
