  A brief overview of the cutaneous effects from exposure to fibrous glass and a perspective on the ocular effects are given. Considerations for the cutaneous effects include allergic sensitization to other agents associated with glass fibers such as binders and coupling agents, immunity or adaption to the effects of the fibers, clinical manifestation, mechanism of action of the glass fibers in causing pruritus, diagnosis and etiology, use of fiber glass in consumer products, exposure of consumers especially through laundering fiberglass products such as curtains and operations involving sawing or grinding fibrous glass products. Doubt is cast on the only case reported of the ocular effects of fibrous glass, and its being a problem of any size is dismissed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
