Description:The differences in structure of various asbestos materials are discussed with methods for the measurement of very small quantities of asbestos and quartz. Chrysotile (12001295), hydrated magnesium- silicate, has a layered structure with circles and spirals. In antigorite, the silica tetrahedra is directly bonded first to one then to the other of the adjacent magnesia. Amphiboles have a ribbon-like structure, the fibrils having a number of ribbons twisted together. Photographs and charts are presented which give the details of the methods for measuring very small quantities of asbestos (1332214) and quartz (1317799). [Description provided by NIOSH]
