Description:Some of the work performed by NIOSH on the behavioral and psychological factors involved in the creation of safe and healthful job conditions, in compliance with the 1970 Occupational Safety and Health Act, is described. Emphasis is placed on the human elements influencing accident potential in high risk jobs, the utility of psychological strategies for accident control, and management oriented approaches, focusing on safety program practices of companies having high and low accident rates. The effect on behavior of various chemical and physical agents is also analyzed. Specific topics include the finding of greater absenteeism in high noise areas, positive reinforcement as the first step towards preventing job injuries, role of supervision and safety training.
