Description:A discussion is presented on ventilation and its importance in industrial hygiene and safety. Current research is revealing more and more about the toxicity of numerous industrial chemicals. In many cases this research has provided information for the establishment of maximum exposure levels for these chemicals, however, these standards are useless unless there is a concurrent improvement in ventilation engineering to provide methods for maintaining safe standards in the industrial plant. Examples of current research being carried out on the efficiency of ventilation systems are presented, and problems associated with the control of arc welding metal and nitrogen-oxide (10102439) (10102440) fumes, grinding dusts from beryllium (7440417) and quartz (1317799) grinding operations, and asbestos (1332214) dusts are discussed.
