Description:A method for sampling and analysis of bromine (7726956) in air at concentrations of 0.1 part per million was developed and tested. Twenty eight substances were screened for their ability to react with bromine vapor in a gas/solid reaction. A significant degree of reactivity was identified for diphenylamine, N-vinylcarbazole, o- dianisidine, o-aminophenol, and m-aminophenol on various types of filters. No reaction products of bromine and o-aminophenol and m- aminophenol were determined when methanol extracts of substrates exposed to bromine were analyzed. The N-vinylcarbazole, o- dianisidine, and diphenylamine substrates each yielded reaction products capable of being chromatographed; however, the peaks attributed to these products were extremely small. The reaction of bromine with silver membrane filters was promising but did not yield a validated method. High and somewhat variable blanks caused considerable uncertainty in bromide ion determinations in extracts of filters. Attempts to determine extracted bromide ion by ion chromatography were thwarted by interference from contaminants in candidate extraction media, by low recoveries induced by inefficient extraction procedures, and by the possible occurrence of side reactions during extraction and analysis. The authors conclude that none of the methods based on the sorbents are worthy of validation. A resolution of the problems encountered may be to extract exposed filters with a cyanide ion solution and then to determine bromide ion by ion chromatography. Another alternative may be to determine chemically bound bromide on a silver filter by a nondestructive technique such as X-ray fluorescence. [Description provided by NIOSH]
