An ergonomic-based program plan for controlling musculoskeletal disorders: a proposed program of interdivisional research.

  A program of interdivisional research into the control of musculoskeletal disorders is reviewed. The goal of the program is to expand the scientific basis for the identification, evaluation, and control of biomechanical trauma in the workplace to reduce and prevent musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. Five programs are proposed to meet the goals of the program: expand and upgrade the existing surveillance system to identify high risk occupations based on the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders; conduct or sponsor research to establish relationships between usage patterns and musculoskeletal conditions; develop guidelines for implementing interventions and control procedures; track changes in industrial technology and anticipate sources of potential cumulative injury; and assist media experts in preparing and disseminating information on controlling the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders. Program responsibilities of each of the participants and program definitions are outlined. Changes in the workplace are assessed in terms of new technology.
