Presence sensing machine safety devices: principles and limitations.

  Uses and operating principles of presence sensing machine safety devices are discussed. Existing regulations for these devices are reviewed along with claims by manufacturers and opinions of users. Operating and ergonomic principles are evaluated, and man/machine interfaces are discussed. Capacitive devices are described, and their limitations are noted. A Fault Tree is included to illustrate the potential hazards of presence sensing devices. Possible injury causes are discussed and classified as selection and installation failures, device failures, and machine system failures. The authors conclude that presence sensing machine safety devices can be used effectively when their operating capabilities and limitations are thoroughly understood. It is stressed that using a presence sensing device is one method by which machine hazards can be controlled when human presence is a factor in machine operations. Any hazard control method should be selected based on OSHA requirements and characteristics of the machine, task, tooling and operator. [Description provided by NIOSH]
