Description:The interactions of mercury (7439976), cadmium (7440439), selenium (7782492), tellurium (13494809), arsenic (7440382), and beryllium (7440417) in elemental carcinogenesis are examined. A hypothesis relating ionization potentials to covalent bond stabilities and to organic/inorganic complexes to explain elemental carcinogenesis at a molecular level is presented. Results are discussed from a variety of carcinogenicity studies with beryllium alone, interactions with mercury and selenium, and interactions with arsenic and tellurium. The authors suggest that these metals are carcinogens by virtue of hypothetical ability to form exceptionally stable, four membered, covalent, coordination complexes with nucleic acids and other organic compounds.
