Description:The vibration acceleration of pneumatic tools used in chipping or grinding operations was studied. Vibration acceleration measurements were taken on four Type 2 chipping hammers, a small stone chipper, and a vertical and horizontal grinder during an actual work situation in two iron foundries, a shipyard, and a limestone quarry. Measurements were taken at points where workers grip their tools. When the Type 2 hammers were operated at full throttle for chipping gray iron or mild steel castings, acceleration levels on the chisel were approximately 2400 gravities root mean square (grms) and 30grms on the rear handle. Acceleration levels reduced themselves by a factor of 12 when throttle was reduced by 50 percent. Rear handle accelerations and the ratio of chisel to rear handle acceleration also went down. Acceleration levels were 500grms and 200grms, respectively, for the chisel and the barrel handle of the small stone chipper and ranged from a low of 0.56grms on the vertical grinder to a high of 2.09grms on the horizontal grinder. The authors note that in no case did the acceleration of the chipping hammer chisels fall within the limits set by the International Standard (ISO) 5349, although the acceleration levels of the grinders were distributed within the ISO 5349 acceptability range of 30 minute to 8 hour exposures.
