Description:A respirator cartridge and canister evaluation program developed at the Haskell Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine is presented. The need for additional tests beyond those required for NIOSH approval is examined. Parameters of the test method and a diagram of the equipment setup is provided. The influence on test results of test vapor concentration, relative humidity, and amount of sorbent are described, using the results of tests conducted with acrolein (107028) and acrylonitrile (107131) as test examples. The author concludes that breakthrough times are unpredictable for different types of compounds and that more valid testing results can be obtained by measuring breakthrough times under exposure conditions that will be encountered at the particular facility.
