Description:The development of a sampling and analytical method for the determination of n-octanethiol (111886) in air and the unsuccessful attempt to develop a method for the determination of benzenethiol (108985) are described. Background information, development and evaluation of an analytical method, selection and evaluation of a solid sorbent sampling medium, and evaluation of the total sampling and analysis method are discussed. The method for n-octanethiol was based on the collection of the compound from air with a solid sorbent, Tenax-GC, the desorption of the compound with acetone (67641), and the analysis of the extract by a gas chromatograph equipped with a sulfur specific flame photometric detector. The overall method was evaluated in the concentration range of 0.3 to 6.6 milligrams per cubic meter, and the relative standard deviations were pooled to yield a value of 6.5 percent, with an average recovery of 98 percent. The authors conclude that the method provides a valid technique for sampling and analysis of n- octanethiol in workplace atmospheres. [Description provided by NIOSH]
