Description:Exposure to N-nitroso compounds in the machine shop environment of the Ford Dearborn tool and die facility (SIC-3542) was investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on December 16, 1977. Ford M589B and Ford M3C14AE cutting fluid and quench oil samples were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography at a detection limit of 1 microgram per milliliter. No N-nitroso compounds were detected in any of the samples, except for one of Ford M589B cutting fluid which contained an N-nitroso- diethanolamine (1116547) (NDEIA) concentration of 16 micrograms per milliliter. NIOSH concludes that Ford M97B14A, a bactericide added to the Ford M589B and which contains formaldehyde (50000), may have catalyzed the synthesis of NDEIA. [Description provided by NIOSH]
