Description:The efficiency of pesticide respirator cartridges was evaluated. Sodium-chloride (7647145) (NaCl) and polydisperse dioctyl-phthalate (117817) (PDOP) aerosols were used to test 20 each of American Optical, Mine Safety Appliances, Norton, and Willson cartridges. Norton cartridges had significantly greater penetration rates than the others. Degeneration occurred using PDOP with American Optical and Willson cartridges. Cartridges with electrostatically charged filters lost particulate filtering efficiency when exposed to oil based PDOP aerosols. The authors recommend that a filter degradation test be included in the NIOSH pesticide respirator certification program. [Description provided by NIOSH]
