Description:Procedures and plans for developing an occupational hazard assessment of the day and organic pigment (DP) industry are reviewed. The chemical process involved in the manufacture of dyes and pigments are discussed, and the various product applications are described. The sources and extent of exposure to chemical and physical agents in various phases of the DP industry are discussed. The trend of injury and illness incidence in the DP industry are discussed and compared with other industrial sectors. The biological effects of exposure to dyes and pigments are described, and the toxicity of various substances are discussed. Acute toxicity studies and epidemiologic studies of occupational exposure to dyes are discussed, and their limitations are identified. Program elements of hazard control efforts are identified, and the importance of management policy and attitudes is discussed.
