  The historical evolution of the federal industrial air standard for nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) is discussed. Chemical and physical properties and acute and chronic effects in man and animals are described. The bases for recommended past and present standards are considered, and the current federal standard of a ceiling of 5 parts per million per 8 hour day per 40 hour work week is evaluated. The author notes that differing recommended limits and standards for occupational exposure to nitrogen-dioxide are based on a value judgement of essentially the same animal and human data.
