Description:Three commercially available stainless steel cyclones were compare as precollectors in two stage respirable dust samples. Aerotech 3/4, Unico 240, and Aerotech 2 cyclones were placed in test chambers containing technetium-99M labeled monodisperse ferric-oxide (1309371) aerosols or preclassified coal dust. Pressure drops, collection efficiency, and mass loading were determined. Pressure versus flow characteristics were most uniform for the Aerotech 2 cyclone and most variable for the Aerotech 3/4 cyclone. Flow rates at which the Aerotech 3/4, Unico 240, and Aerotech 2 cyclones met the acceptance criteria of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists were 25, 75, and 430 liters per minute, respectively. Collection efficiency of each cyclone slightly decreased with increasing dust concentration due to the scouring effect. The authors note that these cyclones are built individually, allowing for the possibility of structural variability between units. Strict quality control measures are needed if the cyclones are to be used for size selective aerosol sampling. [Description provided by NIOSH]
