Description:Engineering control technology for the plastics and resins industry (SIC-2821 through 2824) was investigated. Detailed studies were conducted for polyvinyl-chloride (9002862) (PVC) mass polymerization, suspension, and dispersion; acrylonitrile (107131), butadiene (106990) and styrene (100425) resin manufacture; polystyrene process, styrene-butadiene (9003558) rubber emulsion polymerization; phenolic resin production, alkyl phenol resin production, liquid and solid epoxy process; toluene-diisocyanate (26471625); and phenolic resin compounding processes. Toxic chemicals and harmful physical agents investigated also included asbestos (1332214), benzene (71432), bisphenol-A (80057), cadmium (7440439), chromium (7440473), diglycidyl-ether of bisphenol A (25085998), epichlorohydrin (106898), formaldehyde (50000), hydrogen- chloride (7647010), lead (7439921), monochlorobenzene (108907), phosgene (75445), polyvinyl-chloride dust, sodium-hydroxide (1310732), and xylene (1330207). The authors conclude that the PVC industry can attain a significant reduction in worker exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
