Description:The evaluation of pilot scale air cleaners and monitors for use in a recirculating exhaust system is reviewed. Evaluation criteria are developed for extractive type and safety monitoring air filters and can be applied to almost any recirculation application. A schematic of the pilot testing arrangement is presented. Measurement methods for sampling iron (7439896), iron-oxides, manganese-oxide, particulate fluorides, ozone (10028156), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), gaseous fluorides and carbon-monoxide (630080) are discussed. Details for operation and testing of filters and air monitoring devices are provided, together with evaluation results for each. System components are described and a cost evaluation for the system is included. The authors conclude that the pilot testing approach is an effective evaluation tool for a recirculating exhaust system. They note that the cost of testing is high and it is time consuming, and justification of the program would depend on the number of sites available for utilization. [Description provided by NIOSH]
