  Worker exposures to toluene (108883) were determined at the International Shoe Company (SIC-3143) in Salem, Missouri, on January 16, 1979. The company was under consideration of inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational toluene exposure. Approximately 428 of the employees were assigned to the production areas surveyed. Medical services were furnished by a local clinic and first aid trained employees. The company maintained a formal safety program. Personnel records were available dating back to 1949. Toluene concentrations measured by charcoal and Draeger tubes ranged from 15 to 30 parts per million (ppm). Total hydrocarbons ranged from 100 to 199ppm. All samples for toluene and total hydrocarbons were below the threshold limit value. The author concludes that a determination regarding this facility's suitability for inclusion in the epidemiological study will be made at a later date. [Description provided by NIOSH]
