Description:Test results using the NIOSH analytical method S344 for 2,4- toluenediisocyanate (584849) are evaluated. The procedure involved collection in a midget impinger and analysis by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Drawbacks of the method include the use of toluene as a collection solvent, oxidation of the nitro reagent after sample collection, and deterioration of the chromatographic column due to the excess nitro reagent. The author recommends that development and validation of this method be continued. Additional tests should be directed toward eliminating the problems associated with the nitro reagent.
