Description:The development of a sampling and analytical method for the determination of pentachloroethane (76017) (PCE) in air is described. The development and evaluation of the analytical method are discussed including selection of the gas chromatographic operating conditions and calibration of the gas chromatographic method. Collection media and preliminary evaluation are reviewed including capacity tests, preliminary desorption efficiency and stability tests, determination of the limit of detection, the recommended sampling device, and additional capacity tests. The method is based on the collection of the compound from air with a solid sorbent, the desorption of the compound with hexane, and the analysis of the extract by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. The evaluation of the total method includes additional desorption efficiency tests, stability of PCE collected with Porapale R from test atmospheres, and accuracy and precision of the total method.
