Description:The clinical and epidemiological features of three outbreaks of neurologic diseases among workers in the United States caused by environmental exposure to neurotoxic chemicals are reviewed. The chemicals are Kepone (143500), dimethylaminopropionitrile (1738256) (DMAPN) and methyl-butyl-ketone (591786) (MBK). The symptoms and frequency of occurrences of cases, the categories of workers, incidence of exposure, the source of exposure and manner of detection are described. The authors suggest that many small isolated outbreaks of neurologic disease of obscure origin may be due to occupational or environmental exposure to neurotoxic chemicals. They conclude that recognition of the etiology of chemically induced neurologic illness and isolation of new neurotoxic syndromes from the mass of neurologic illness of undetermined origin will require a high index of clinical suspicion, careful ascertainment of occupational history, and a sensitivity to epidemiologic factors.
