Description:A statistical model for determining the relationship between the coefficient of variation (CV) and total fiber count of asbestos (1332214) fibers is described. The model is applied to data from 109 asbestos fiber measurements. The CV declines with increasing average total fibers counted and is related to fiber density. The NIOSH recommended asbestos sampling and counting procedure provides fiber concentration estimates within about 23 percent of the true concentration 95 percent of the time. The authors suggest that samples should be collected for as long as necessary to obtain sufficient surface fiber density on the filter; the average number of fibers per field counted should be close to 1.
