Respirable and total dust exposures of workers in six exporting grain elevators.

  Time-weighted and total grain dust concentrations for six exporting terminal grain elevators were measured to determine occupational exposure levels to grain dusts. Personal respirable and total concentrations of grain dust were determined for each cooperating worker. General area sampling was performed using a cascade impactor and a high-volume air sampler. Workers were exposed to geometric mean concentrations of 0.33 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m) respirable dust and 3.71mg/cu m total dust. Total dust levels were similar from job to job and for each of the facilities within each location, but they varied from location to location. The highest mean respirable dust exposures were observed for temporary help, laborers, and grain cleaners. Less than 25 percent of grain dust was found to be of respirable size. The concentrations reported were within the range of exposures measured in previous NIOSH and OSHA investigations. The author recommends future studies on grain exposures, including particle analysis and toxicity determinations. [Description provided by NIOSH]
