Description:A method for the determination of furfuryl-alcohol (98000) in air is described. A known volume of air is drawn though a glass tube containing Porapak Q to trap furfuryl-alcohol vapors. The furfuryl- alcohol is desorbed from the Porapak Q with acetone, and the sample is analyzed by gas chromatography. The method was validated between 117 and 469 milligrams per cubic meter using a 6 liter sample. The sampling device is small, portable, and involves no liquids. Interferences are minimal, and most can be eliminated by altering chromatographic conditions. The chromatographic tubes are analyzed using a rapid instrumental method. The method is limited by tube capacity (number of milligrams of sample it can hold before overloading); and precision is limited by the reproducibility of the pressure drop across the tubes. The apparatus, reagents, procedure, sample analysis, determination of desorption efficiency, calibration of standards, and calculations involved in this method are described.
