Description:A personal pump sampling method was tested for monitoring hydrazine (302012), 1,1-dimethylhydrazine (57147), phenylhydrazine (100630), and monomethylhydrazine (60344) vapors. The new method included a simplified procedure for preparing adsorbed hydrazine samples for analysis, use of a 6 millimeter ionization detector tube, and sample extraction from aqueous reaction solution. Air samples were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography, and 1,1- dimethylhydrazine samples were compared for precision and accuracy to samples simultaneously collected in bubblers. Test methods and results of gas chromatographic analysis of five polyfunctional amines, and desorption and storage of aminoalcohols were examined. The 6 millimeter ionization detector tube had deeper beds for the same amount of sorbent and compatibility with current commercial equipment. Aqueous reaction solution sampling inhibited further reaction of the monomethylhydrazine derivative 2-furaldehyde (98011), enhanced the sensitivity of analysis, and provided dissolution of insoluble derivatives formed with 2-furaldehyde at high concentrations. Recovery rates of over 90 percent were obtained for hydrazine, 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, and phenylhydrazine, but only 75 to 84 percent was obtained for monomethylhydrazine. Concentrations of 1,1-dimethylhydrazine were statistically identical for samples measured by bubblers and by the test method. [Description provided by NIOSH]
