Description:The intensity of electric and magnetic fields generated by the dielectric presses at Blair Industries (SIC-3643) in Chicago, Illinois was measured on April 5, 1979 to determine radio frequency (RF) exposures of 35 to 40 workers in heat sealing operations. The field intensities were corrected for duty cycle to determine individual press operator exposure. Of the five heat sealing presses evaluated, two equalled or exceeded current American National Standards Institute guidelines of 200 volts per meter electric field and 0.5 amperes per meter magnetic field. The author recommends shielding these heat sealers to reduce employee exposure. NIOSH is still considering Blair Industries as a participant in a study of the long term effects of RF exposure.
