The future occupational physician - what should his training be?

  The didactic, research, clinical, and practical phases of the 2 year occupational medicine training program at the University of Utah are described. The program is part of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health. The first year of the program basically is devoted to the didactic phase and consists of four tracks: occupational and environmental health, biostatistics and epidemiology, health care delivery, and behavioral science. Courses offered include program evaluation, occupational lung diseases, advanced in occupational medicine, biochemical toxicology, management methods, and air pollution. The research phase is epidemiologically oriented. The clinical phase includes 4 months of clinical and laboratory pulmonary studies, and studies in clinical dermatology and occupational medicine. The practical phase possibly will include training at industry and labor union facilities and provision of medical backup to health response teams at OSHA analytical laboratories in Salt Lake City.
