Description:Behavior modification is based on the principle that people will act by a set of rules if they are reinforced in a direct, immediate, and consistent manner. This technique can be used to encourage safe behavior on the job. Behavior modification guidelines deal with the consequences of behavior, scheduling of consequences, pitfalls in scheduling consequences, and implementation/general considerations. Consequences of behavior may be reinforcers, such as promotion, recognition, or pay raises, which increase the likelihood of the behavior, or negative reinforcers, such as threats of pay loss, job loss, or reprimands. Schedules of reinforcement can range from continuous, in which every occurrence of the target behavior is rewarded, to the situation where no reinforcement is given. The circumstances of reinforcers can also be controlled. The improper use of behavior modification techniques may produce undesired effects and a number of pitfalls. Guidelines for scheduling consequences dealing with noncontingent reinforcement, noncontingent punishment, and reinforcement opportunity. Also crucial to the success of a behavioral modification program are practice, or repetition of with consequences, and record-keeping, which can serve as an aid in monitoring the effects of a behavioral modification program and as an effective consequence of behavior by providing feedback to the individual.
